Are Your Facebook Cover Images and Ads Violating Facebook’s 20% Text Rule?

facebook heartFacebook recently has made some changes to the guidelines of cover photo’s, page post ads and sponsored stories in the news feed. Basically, you can’t promote images with more than 20% text in them. How do you know if you’re violating Facebook’s guidelines? In my opinion, it’s hard to tell unless you are a graphic designer and have the natural ability to eyeball the graphics. I found a handy tool that will help you quickly determine if you’re in violation. Facebook will also be releasing a tool to help quickly determine whether your image satisfies the 20% limit. In the meantime, check out the Promotheus app.

With this tool, you can check the “20% of text” compliance of your cover image, promoted page or page post and sponsored stories. As stated in Facebook Advertising Guidelines: ” Cover Photo’s, Ads and sponsored stories in News Feed may not include images comprised of more than 20% text.” Though the guideline says that the restriction relates only to News Feed, we suggest you check your ad images appearing in the sidebar. These ads may appear as sponsored in the News Feed and that might be a problem. This new policy replaces previous policies around calls to action, price or purchase information, etc. It only applies to cover images, feed eligible Page post ads and sponsored stories (including links, offers, and mobile app install units) – it does not apply to market place ads. Additionally, brands can still post images with more than 20% text on their timelines; they just can’t promote them with paid media.

Here’s how to check your images:

1. Type in your Facebook business page URL  or Upload an image.

2. Click ‘Get Image’ or ‘Upload Image.’

3. Next, click on the area (rectangles) where you have text. The Promotheus app will let you know what percentage of your graphic has text. If you’re 20% or less, you’re all set.

More Cover Photo Guidelines

Just in case you didn’t know, cover photos may not contain the following information:

  • Promotion, price or purchase information. You need an app for that. For example, “40% off,” “Download it at our website,” or “Free cover page design all month.”
  • Contact information. For example, your web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section.
  • References to user interface elements. For example, Like and Share or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
  • Calls to action. For example, “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”

[Infographic] How Users Interact on Pinterest

Pinterest-Yellow-Brick-Road-InfographicIf a picture is worth a thousand words, then Pinterest is the biggest dictionary. As of recent, Pinterest hit 10 million U.S. monthly unique visitors faster than any independent site in history. An increase of 2,702.2%! It has experienced exponential growth since bursting on the social media scene in 2011 and had the largest year-over-year increase in social desktop usage, social web usage and social app usage.

And how do users spend time on Pinterest?  They spend most of their time pinning pictures on their boards, 83.9%, followed by liking other pins (15.5%). The engagement on Pinterest is not that strong, only 0.6% of users comment on pins. Moreover, 80% of the content shared on Pinterest are re-pins of pictures from other users. In terms of gender, females still dominate Pinterest’s usage, making up the overwhelming majority of the audience – more than 80%. It has been proven that more women than men spend money online. A large portion of women even buy all their clothes on the Internet. In fact, Pinterest pins with prices get 36% more likes than those without.

If you’re looking for interaction and traffic, then Pinterest is not such a bad option to pursue. The site has a strong community and is steaming with activity. You can easily strike up a following if you’re active. This infographic will give you some detail on how users are interacting with pins, boards, other users and brands on Pinterest in order to grow your following on this social networking site.

As a side note, over 1/5 of Facebook-connected users are on Pinterest daily, which represents more than 2 million members. (source: AppData) If you have a Pinterest business page, you can add a Pinterest app to your Facebook business page for free. Pinterest Rolls Out Business Pages. Pintastic News!

On November 14, 2012, Pinterest rolled out business pages in an effort to help more businesses provide great content on Pinterest and make it easy to pin from their websites.  There are two ways that you can get your Pinterest business page up and running. First, if your organization is new to Pinterest, sign up  for a business account. Second, you can convert your existing personal account by following the steps on the business site.

There are four things that you need to be aware of:

1. New Business Terms. Basically, there are now two sets of terms—one for people and one for businesses. The business terms help guide businesses on how to use Pinterest. They are half as long, the language is simplified and they are offering “translations” of the legalese language.

2. Add new buttons and widgets. Integrate the Pin It buttonFollow buttonProfile widget, or Board widget  to get more engagement from pinners and traffic back your site. Check out new guides and documentation for the Pin It and Follow buttons and how to use the Pinterest brand in marketing materials.

3. Verify your website. After you’ve signed up on Pinterest or converted your account, you’ll need to verify your website. The verification badge helps people identify high-quality sources of content and more easily find the business they want in search results.

4. Access to upcoming features. The Pinterest blog was very vague about what these upcoming features are going to be so there’s not much insight that I can give you. Maybe some metrics?

Now that you have (or will soon have) an official business page on Pinterest, I recommend using pingraphy for scheduling and tracking pins. Also note that Pinterest has published some case studies from the following companies: JetsetterAllrecipesEtsyOrganized Interiors, and Petplan Insurance.  These companies share metrics and describe how they successfully used Pinterest to increase customer reach, drive traffic to their sites, and engage their strongest advocates. LinkedIn Rolls Out New Feature to Company Pages: Header Images to Increase Brand Identity

LinkedIn has once again rolled out new features to company pages. The biggest and best change, in my opinion, is that companies can now easily add a custom header that best represents their brand so their look and feel is consistent across all social channels furthering brand awareness. A picture is worth a thousand words without a doubt.

There were also a few more minor updates also made such as:

  • The follow button has been placed in a more prominent location to help increase their follower base.
  • LinkedIn is now allowing you to target status updates.
  • The navigation has also received a makeover. Products and Services  have been moved to the right sidebar, intended to give your products and services more exposure to visitors of your company page.
  • For select companies, such as American Express , Unilever , Expedia , LinkedIn also started to offer a more compelling and visual way for them to showcase their employer brand through the Career Pages section of Company Pages. LinkedIn thinks this new look and feel makes it easier for companies to tell their employer story and make the job hunt process more personalized for job seekers.

If you need a little help figuring out ‘How To’ upload your image, I’ve included some screenshots to walk you through the process. Hope this helps.

1. Go to your Company Page, and click to “Upload an Image.”

2. Click “Add an Image.”

3. Choose your file and upload. LinkedIn will let you resize your image if you haven’t done so already. The header needs to be 646 x 220 pixels. Click “upload.”

4. Click “Publish.” Note: What to do if  you get an error uploading your image. (This happened to me several times!) Try using Internet Explorer instead of Chrome. For some reason, I was able to upload my header image when not using Chrome.

Of course, one of the essential metrics in Facebook Marketing is Reach, or how many people your posts are actually reaching. It is said that the average is around the 20%, which doesn’t necessarily mean you should expect that. The below screenshot represents the performance of BrandLove’s last 7 Facebook posts. My average reach is 40.2% of my fans without any paid advertising. It also shows the mininum reach and maximum reach.

Who are my Fans?

“Who are my fans” is basically a quick snapshot and more visual version of the “Who you reached” charts provided by Facebook Insights. With the Minilytics version, you can easily read the gender and age groups. Do you think you’ll be surprised by the results of your fan base?

Best Type of Post?

In this case, Minilytics is gathering data from the last 100 posts to analyze what type of post is performing best with your audience. “Type” meaning your media, photos, videos, status or links. If you haven’t posted a certain “type,” maybe you haven’t posted any videos–Minilytics will not have any idea how those types of posts would have performed–so they are ignored for the calculation. On a side note, if you are only posting links at this time, I would highly recommend experimenting with photo’s and video’s since they have the highest reach and are the most engaging types of posts. MTV India found that photo albums increased clicks by 1290%. Seriously.

Best time to post?

Minilytics calculates this report based on the time when your Fans commented in your last 100 posts. This is valuable information if you’re looking to find premium times to post your updates. After all, your Facebook business page should be all about engaging with your fans, right?

Facebook Launches New Feature: Editing Comments

As of Thursday, Facebook is now offering the ability to edit your comments. The edit option appears in the form of a small pencil icon on the right side of your comment. Clicking on the pencil will bring up a drop-down menu with the option to edit your comment as well as the option to delete it entirely. If you’re like any of more than 900 million people who have ever used Facebook, then I’m sure there has been a time where you’ve posted a comment you chose to delete.  If you do make changes and save them, the system will add a small “Edited” tag below your comment to indicate to you and others that there have been changes. When you hover above the tag, it’ll say “Show edit history,” and if you click you’ll  get a history of changes made — which should deter jokesters who rewrite their comments and troll their friends.
